Why One Test Page Saves a Whole Batch

The 50 mm square never lies

Printers love to “help”. The default setting in most print dialogs is “Fit to printable area”, which quietly shrinks your file by 3–6%. On an A5 insert that drift is enough to push every punch mark off your rings and make boxed layouts feel cramped. The large square on the test page is exactly 50 × 50 mm: print the page, measure it with any ruler, and if it reads 48.5 mm you know the dialog scaled the file. Switch to “Actual size” or 100% and print again — the square is your proof, not your eyes.

Read the rulers and the greyscale like a technician

The millimetre rulers along the top and left edge let you verify scale in both directions — some printers distort only one axis. The 10-step greyscale ramp tells you about ink health: if the lightest two steps are invisible, your contrast is fine but your nozzles may be over-inking; if the darkest steps look washed out or streaky, run a nozzle check before printing 30 pages of inserts. One minute of reading beats a wasted afternoon.

Punch marks: trust, but verify

Ring planners (A5, Personal, Personal Wide, A6, Pocket) use two groups of three holes; disc planners (Happy Planner Classic / Mini) need a mushroom-shaped punch. The test page draws the marks for your selected size 3.2 mm from the left edge — hold the page inside your actual binder before punching anything. Binders vary by a millimetre between brands, and this single check has saved more inserts than any other step on the checklist above.

50mm 方框从不说谎

打印机最喜欢「自作聪明」。多数打印对话框默认勾选「适应可打印区域」，会悄悄把文件缩小 3–6%。对 A5 内页来说，这点漂移足以让所有孔位偏离活页环，格子也显得局促。测试页上的大方框精确为 50×50mm：打印出来用任意尺子量一量，如果读数是 48.5mm，就说明对话框缩放了文件。改选「实际尺寸」或 100% 重新打印——方框是证据，眼睛不是。

像技术员一样读尺规和灰阶

顶部和左侧的毫米尺规可以分别验证两个方向的缩放——有些打印机只在一个轴上变形。10 级灰阶则反映墨水状态：如果最浅的两级完全看不见，对比度尚可但喷头可能过墨；如果最深的几级发灰或有条纹，请先做一次喷头检查，再批量打印 30 页内页。花一分钟读测试页，胜过浪费一个下午。

孔位标记：信任，但要验证

活页本（A5、Personal、Personal Wide、A6、Pocket）是两组三孔布局；圆盘本（Happy Planner Classic / Mini）需要蘑菇形打孔器。测试页会按所选尺寸在距左边缘 3.2mm 处画出孔位——打孔之前，请把这页纸放进你真实的本子里比对。不同品牌的本子孔位可能相差一毫米，而清单上这一步救下的内页比任何其他步骤都多。
